Albert Martinez

Biography

He was hoodlum, gay, father, lover, teacher, drunkard, drug addict, masochist—name it, almost every type of possible role there is was already played by Albert Martinez. Indeed, he still remains one of the most sought-after and bankable Philippine actors for a very long time, this, despite the emergence of new breed of equally talented young ones.

Albert Reyes Martinez was born on April 19, 165. His brother, William, was also a matinee idol. At first Albert wasn’t really into the limelight, only William. He would often recall those times when he would be driving along him in photo and film shoots, as well as when he’s filming TV commercials. William became part of the famous bagets, when he starred in Bagets 1 in the early 1980s.

Nevertheless, there was fire and passion that kept on growing inside Albert’s mind and heart. When he was a college student in University of Santo Tomas, he became part of the school’s theater guild, Teatro Tomasino. However, he could not fully commit himself to several activities because he was also a hard-core Engineering student. All these changed when William nudged him to try out show business.

It wouldn’t be long before Albert would heed to such advice. He found himself auditioning together with Ricky Davao for the movie Totoo Ba ang Tsismis, where both of them got the lead supporting roles. He then appeared in a number of notable films like Bakit Ba GanyanBata Pa si Sabel, and Blue Jeans, which became his launching vehicle under Regal Films. Because there were more offers flooding in, he had to eventually stop studying.

However, before the 1980s end, Albert was suddenly out of the limelight. He decided to elope with Liezel Sumilang, the only daughter of actor Romeo Vasquez and actress Amalia Fuentes. She was also the cousin of Aga Muhlach . Liezel had just celebrated her eighteenth birthday, when she decided to get away from her household and traveled with Albert all the way to the United States. There, Albert was definitely not a super star or a hunk actor. Rather, he was a gasoline station attendant, which he had to do in order to support his wife and their soon-to-be-born daughter.

They first went to Las Vegas, then to Los Angeles, where they resided for six months. In 1991, they moved to San Francisco. Times were hard, though, more so for Liezel who had to attend to the family without any kind of help. They were also trying their best to make their ends meet. Thus, by October 1991, the family moved back in the Philippines , particularly in Cubao, where they have lived since 1994.

It seems like Albert hasn’t really left. He then starred in several sexy but critically acclaimed films like Scorpio Nights 2SeguristaMumbakiTatsulokSidhi (where he won Best Actor), andMagnifico (which gave him two Best Supporting Actor Awards). He also played Rizal in Rizal Sa Dapitan. Albert was also prominent in TV, the last one being Patayin Sa Sindak Si Barbara.

Albert was once linked to Snooky Serna and Sharon Cuneta . He also considered himself a ham actor during the early part of his career. It was only during an acting workshop with Eric Morris that he was able to let himself go and be one with the characters he play.
